DIALOGO RUBATO IN DISPARTE, NELLA PENOMBRA DELLA TANA – Ferruccio Giromini –

A DIALOGUE STOLEN WHILE STANDING ASIDE, IN A SHADOWY DEN

Who chooses to become an artist?

When and why? Fortunately for us the common mortals, some individuals will not accept to have an ordinary life, with its petty sorrows and trivial victories. Their example helps us gulp down some bitter pills, under the pretext of beauty and intellectual provocation. But, unfortunately for them, these individual painfully strive for something being just rounder, or sharper, or higher, o even sublime. Reality as such cannot satisfy them; thatís why they choose create a new one, or several new ones, for their own sake. They are smallcreators (not simply creative). And they are called artists. Are they all worth being called as such? Certainly not. Like in all circumstances, there are only a few best. Onaverage, they are middling, by definition. And the worst are never lacking. However, regardless of their economic value and quotes, it is not impossible to discriminate and make a way out of the complicated hubbub ofself-proclaimed artists. There are several gimmicks to help divide the goodones from the bad ones. Letís see one for all here: generally, the ones who walk their own lonely way irrespective of the marketís credit are betterthan most of the rest. What they do, they do it for their own sake, becausethey just canít help it, and not because they wish to get tributes orephemeral values. They do it because if they didnít they could not respector approve themselves. They do it because only this way can they feelcomplete and helpful to themselves and to the others. But why so much speculation? Can we not get to the point? Right. Letís do it: we want to talk properly about Giovanna Torresin here.

This artist is worth being included in the respected category of the goodones, since everything she has produced to date she has done it for thesake of her expression only, with no ulterior motives, and certainly not for trade. What are the qualities of her work, of her poetics? Leaving out her beginnings as a substantially informal painter, though thes were already an indication of a magmatic character on the verge of eruption we had better concentrate on her work of the latest years, which representsher current spirit better. Beside the most exterior differences, she alsohas different ways to think and tell her world. The favourite materials ofher meditation originally belong to home life, as if she was looking arounda standard kitchen: cutlery, dishes, glasses, chairs, also slippers.Focusing on what is around her, she stops her time and extends it to analmost transcendental space, which becomes a sort of paradigm of the littlelife we live day by day. Just like Sleeping Beauty in her castle? It may be… Whether she is waiting or not for an indefinite Prince Charmin to come and wake her up, this sleeping-rearing-to-go maiden has this ambivalent feeling, of tenderness and irritation alike, for the items shelives with in her prison-palace that holds and detains her. Her constant disquiet makes her outline, with controlled fits of impatience, a personalgeometry of her captivity. Why and how does everything freeze around her? She is the one to freeze the elements around her, thanks to accurate andruthless castings of concrete, tar, ceramic, resin, wax at best.

Thehalf-full (half-empty) drawers of her room of memories; the unserviceablegear of her tables set in vain, mounted on wheels that are neutralised andwill go nowhere; her potential banquets locked in containers sealed with zi=fasteners; a choir of ladyís bags with their open mouths shut up… Theseare all meows of love pain. This lady must settle her accounts with herpast. She has chosen art to do so, a game elegant in form ñ based on thesequence of three colours of the alchemic transmutation of matter: the redof rubedo, the black of nigredo, the white of albedo ñ and most cruel incontent. This is a worn-out game of castration, a true torture, where shecomes into play too, eventually. When exactly does she come into play? Again, it is a most familiar item to call her onto the stage of her Passion her own cross is a table. That derisive skeleton standing in the middle ofthe kitchen, straight on the bones of its legs, a bearing and scaffold of aquiet and screaming existence behind those four walls. A table, a tablemeans both sorrow and joy for Giovanna Torresin. She splits it in two, sections it, and the two halves brought near to each other on the floorbecome two brackets to contain fragments of the past, bits of yesterday, toremember once again and then forget for good.

The woman blends with thetable, penetrates it and lets herself be penetrated, sometimes withgentleness sometimes with anger. This woman sees the table as a tall lordand master who takes pleasure, unperturbed, in doing whatever he wants withher, such a small lady. They share the stage, but who is the protagonist an who is the deuteragonist? Is it not too easy to answer a question with another question? Rather, after all the gaps plugged in vain, and after the mutual penetrations andconfusions with her multi-edged roommate, where does Giovanna ñ Joan the Maid and the Mad ñ think she will go now, with the courage of her awe? Now is the time when the princess has finally woken up, looks around andfinds herself in front of a mirror. She remembered herself as a girl and no=she finds out she is a woman. As if for the first time, she sees breasts, eggs, vaginas… She thinks and rethinks about the main symbols offertility, feeding, femininity. This is a fixed course for any woman whowishes to become self-conscious.

Through poured liquids ñ milk or resin, blood or quicklime ñ the body of this woman is affirmed and denied in turn, with a seesaw of questions and exclamations that makes you dizzy. Is there a remedy to the dismay arising from deep knowledge? It may be knowledge itself, though painful. Or maybe simply a new strength,as the overworked artist suggests at some point. This strength can beconquered with a heavy helmet, scarcely penetrable, and a new armour to beworn like a second skin, leathery. Not much, but just to increase a bit ourendurance. And the beating heart of the artist ñ persistently worried andvitally rhythmical ñ, this cherished personal war drum, knows it too well.
