Infondo.

IN FLESH AND ON SKIN
I have always tried to give some meaning to the body, to our body. Not onlyout of my personal feeling of unease, but because today like never before,in our society, the body is being denied or repudiated. The body has longbeen masked, hidden from sight, almost armoured against its own originalnature, and paradoxically so using practices that are meant to magnify it..Worse than a burka, I could say in provocation. What is hidden behind thesepractices? Is the body our enemy, being it a daily warning about thefugacity of our life? Is it a concept we keep denying out of our wish to beimmortal, a wish that will always inhabit mankind? So, I wish to force theattention back on this ‘object’, now a mystery, with different provocativevisions, a product of imagination, so as to get hold of it again and getpeople get hold of it again too. Or maybe, this is only my personal way toovercome my fear, like everybody else”. Gianna.Have you ever thought of making love to a table? Yes, a table, the objectwith four legs and sharp edges. Well, Giovanna Torresin – the adventurer ofthe soul (and the flesh) – did it. For years, she has tried to imagineherself naked, totally stripped off of any protections, in a directconfrontation with a sharp-edged table. These two elements of a long-livedrelationship – she soft, he hard – practising an inedited kamasutra inspiredby an inedited fetishism, have been matched together to produce differentresults.

One time, the virginal enthusiasm of an inventive amateur makes herblend with the object of her attention, and create a hybrid reminiscent ofmythology, having table legs and a female torso (do you remember? We spokeabout it in “Blue Art – Di nuovo nudi! published in “Blue”, n.109, June2000). Another time, the hasty vehemence of this copulation against natureleaves her transfixed and exhausted, while her painful ecstasy slowly wanes.Another time, always in the empty space of her neat metaphysical bedroom, the mere shadow of her impossible lover is enough to overcome and subdueher, make her turn red out of passion and shame, and turn pale out of shameand passion. This is an undoubtedly mystical relationship between a passionate anchoriteeager to give herself and a demon so strangely keen to possess her… Intime, this quest for pleasure through excitement and self-humiliation hasimproved and evolved. In her resolute pursuit for tough sanctity, she hasdecided to get increasingly worn away and exposed even more directly. Allthe more naked, all the more abandoned, all the more hung onto thelacerating thread of public stare. Also, she moved her geometrically slimyalcove from the original ideal space – where she had sacrificed her symbolichymen in a bright spiritual retreat – to another real environment, a fairlystandard kitchen, unnaturally clean, to have her flesh be knocked out on theanonymous coldness of the tiles, hugging her haughty partner all the time. Now, her partner has penetrated her.

Even if we can no longer see him, hewill be a part of her for good. How do you feel, Saint Giovanna, after your rehearsal of a martyrdom?Stronger or weaker? Whom are you in love with now? At least with youtortured body, which needs protection against the insinuating follies of anenemy who is some times inside you and some other times outside? You,though, are not beside yourself; on the contrary, you have never beenyourself so much like now. You need an armour – you are telling yourself -and you sew it onto your body. You become leathery. You thicken your skin, lift pachydermal defences. But now, you need to deal with your new(transient) identity. You know, the way to absolute sanctity is still long, and winding, and harsh. Luckily, you have already learnt how to suffer andrealised that you have come to quite like all those pillories, cilices andwhips. After all.
