SENZA TITOLO – Majda Dozeglav Japel –

The exhibition currently held at Gallerie Costiere in Pirano by the Italian artist Giovanna Torresin follows other similar events that have taken place in the same setting by other important international artists such as Robert Mapplethorpe, Anne and and Patrick Poirier, Claude Viallat, Jannis Kounellis and Sandro Chia.

This is Giovanna Torresin’s first exhibition in Slovenia and represents also a synoptic presentation of her work between 1994 and now. The photos and art installations on display have been carefully chosen by the artist in collaboration with curator Sabrina Zannier. They offer the visitors an exhaustive overview of the artist’s poetics, deeply influenced by her difficult relationship with her body, her appearance and her emotions and, in general, the complexity of human relationships. In fact, the artist uses her body as a means to explore her unconsciousness and express her feelings and ideas. This profound and complex interaction between physical and spiritual dimensions helps the artist create works of art that possess a unique and rich aesthetic strenght. Giovanna uses her body as a block of stone to create new shapes and images with the use of everyday objects to distort and modify it.

In the series “Madonne col Bambino” ( The Virgin Mary and the Holy Child) she has interpreted this sacred theme of Christinity using icons from the past to turn herself into a modern archetype of maternal love. In the series of images with hearts the artist has used real organs to create the basic support on which to insert armour’s shapes, laces shades and thorns and turn them into carnal trophies and symbols of the dichotomies that exist within love relationships. The images that the artist offers are visually very strong and some visitors may even find them disturbing; however, there is a sort of mystical aura that emanates from Giovanna Torresin’s artworks and transforms the objects in her photos into artefacts that could be worshipped and kept as if they were religious treasures and makes her art production one to be observed, discovered and admired.
